Natural capital and carbon
Gundamain Pastoral has a commitment to the sustainability of their land, business, industry, and region. Gundamain has begun the process of understanding their position in regards to biodiversity, vegetation, emission generation and potential for emissions reduction. Gundamain is committed to measuring and monitoring these natural capital assets, enhancing what already exists and addressing any deficiencies identified.
To do this work Gundamain has initiated a program with Integrity Ag and Environment to assess our carbon emissions from sheep and cattle, develop a baseline report for our customers and stakeholders, develop a field assessment of biodiversity, identifying any future opportunities and a desktop assessment of vegetation for any potential projects.
Data for input into these projects will be sourced from existing paddock and feedlot software, satellite data, on ground measurements and field work.
Previous projects on Gundamain have identified two large areas identified as forest (vegetation that has a height of 2 metres, crown canopy of at least 20% and a minimum forest area of 0.2 hectares.) A Mullion Group report (using FLINTpro software) from 2020 suggests that from 1988 there was a gradual decline in forest cover and carbon in the area, before stabilising in the 2000s and then showing a gradual increase in forest cover and carbon from around 2008.
Much of this forested area has been set aside for a Swift parrot project in partnership with Central West Local Land services.
RENEWABLE ENERGY
In partnership with Origin Energy Gundamain Feedlot has installed large scale solar project which provides most of the power for the mill at the feedlot. The project, A 70.2kW system, is installed on shed roofs and is battery compatible. An energy audit completed with NSW farmers Association identified the mill the largest user of power.
